Studies show that gastrointestinal problems were far more visible in autistic children than normal children

A study was conducted on 1000 children by CHARGE through April, 2003 and May, 2011. Children were between 24-60 months with half white, 1/3 rd Hispanic and the rest from other racial backgrounds. Assessments were done on the basis of GIH and ABC questionnaire’s filled by the parents. It was assessed by MIND Institute. Results showed children with autism were 6-8 times more prone to GI. It shows that a chronic GU problem in autistic children can results in discomfort, irritability and social withdrawal. This increased their hyperactive and repetitive behaviours. This resulted in more stress, less response to medication and hence more GI problems. This went on as a cycle. Appropriate medical intervention might offer relief to some extent. But more studies are necessary. As Chaidez says we should” begin investigating the effects of various treatments and their effects on both GI symptoms and problem behaviors” to solve this.
