The Results of Assisted Reproduction Is Largely Dictated by the Mother’s Ethnicity
Nottingham University's Research and Treatment Unit in Reproduction (NURTURE) has conducted a study that assesses the relationship between the clinical success of a fertility treatment and the ethnicity of a woman. It was found that the success rate was higher in white European women compared to those of other ethnic backgrounds.
Clinical pregnancy, implants as well as live birth rates were significantly lower among the non white ethnic groups. Even among the different ethnic groups a disparity was noticed with South East Asian women having higher success rates than those of Middle East Asian or African Caribbean origin.
The results of this study will help doctors give women a more realistic picture of their chances of reproduction and counsel them accordingly. It will also encourage women from ethnic backgrounds to start an early treatment in assisted reproduction like IVF and ICSI so as to get successful results.
