Acute cholecystitis patients require immediate surgery

The Heidelberg University Hospital Department of Surgery proved that acute cholecystitis requires immediate surgery, already in the following 24 hours after diagnosis because there isn`t an advantage of using antibiotics. It is considered that patients who opt for immediate surgery face fewer complications. “With this study, we were finally able to present scientific evidence that allows us to resolve years of controversy”, explained Prof. Markus W. Büchler, Director of Heidelberg University Hospital`s Department of Surgery. The main body area that is supposed to risk from this condition is the gallbladder and if left untreated, this can cause serious infections in the abdominal cavity. Immediate surgery decreases complaints and complications The study was made by a lot of surgeons from various centers in Germany, with 300 patients randomly placed in groups. Patients with immediate surgery stayed in hospital for only 5.4 days and reported fewer complaints while patients with delayed surgery stayed 10 days in hospital and had higher hospitalization costs. The popularity of the Heidelberg General, Visceral and Transplantation Surgery is thanks to its outstanding transplantation and surgery procedures. There are 50,000 treated patients yearly at this hospital. There are 8,000 visceral procedural surgeries performed yearly by the interdisciplinary team, from which 1,100 procedures involve the gallbladder.
