Delirium reduced by statin in critically ill patients

A new study proves that statin usage is able to prevent or reduce delirium in critically ill patients. The research was released on 470 intensive care patients from the UK. The lead author of the study is Valerie J Page MB ChB, of the Watford General Hospital in Watford, UK. The results of the study were published in the American Thoracic Society`s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

151 patients out of the total of 470 patients involved in the study received statins but only those patients used statins who also received prior to hospitalization. The statins were proven to significantly reduce delirium. Patients received statins considering their age, sex and severity of illness.

“The relationship between statin therapy and delirium and the mechanisms underlying this relationship are the subject of an ongoing randomized, placebo-controlled study in critically ill ventilated patients”, said Dr. Page.
