Drug Seizures Ineffectiveness in Controlling Illegal Drugs in Canada
The fight on drugs and the cost of seizures imposed on drug trafficking was estimated to trillion dollars within the last four years. As much as countries within North America are struggling to control drug trade and usage, a study led by Canadian researchers revealed that the cost of drugs have become cheaper with improved quality despite the seizures that are being put in place.
The study adopted data on purity and drug prices obtained from drug surveillance systems. The trends obtained were analyzed for the determination of drug supply within the periods between 1990 and 2007.
The study findings indicated an increase of 60% and 11 % in purity of heroin and cocaine respectively. The price of the two also reduced by 81% and 80% respectively within the same period.
“There just did not seem to be any correlation between seizures and drug supply,” said Dan Werb, when referring to the Fruitless efforts by the USA government to impose seizures on drugs. Similar observations have also been made in European and Australian countries.
