Epigenetic lesion discovered in the hippocampus of Alzheimer`s disease

As the society gets older, it is considered that Alzheimer`s disease can achieve epidemic range in the upcoming decades. The two main causes of Alzheimer`s are lack of efficient treatment associated with genetic changes and decreased target numbers for future therapies. An article written by Manel Esteller, Director of Epigenetics and Cancer Biology, Institute of Biomedical Research of Bellvitge (IDIBEL), ICREA researcher and Professor of Genetics at the University of Barcelona, in collaboration with Isidre Ferrer, of the Institute of Neuropathology IDIBELL was published in the international neurology journal, Hippocampus. They prove in the article that epigenetic lesion is present in the hippocampus of the brain in Alzheimer`s patients. Esteller explains the way how they obtained the final results and comments: According Esteller “The finding is relevant not only to determine the causes of the disease, but also to test potential treatments in the future to act on these epigenetic molecular switches”.
