Heart patients stick with medications need a program after leaving from hospital
According to a new study, hospitalized people for angina or heart attack are more likely to regularly take their medications after leaving from hospital, if they get the necessary personal attention from a pharmacist. It is considered that 1/3 of the patients after leaving the hospital stop taking at least one of their medications regularly for at least one month. However, the researchers believe there are several methods to remind these patients for taking their drugs regularly.
There were 241 participants involved in the study, led by Dr. P. Michael Ho from the Denver VA Medical Center and were randomly assigned to receive personal care program. The final results show that 74% of the patients who received personal care program took their medications regularly. This study was published in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.
“Before recommending investment in this strategy, it would be prudent to know that patient outcomes will actually improve”, said Dr. Rita Redberg, editor of JAMA Internal Medicine.
