High dose of statin acts as a preventive against dementia

Statin is used to lower cholesterol level in blood and helps in keeping away heart attacks and strokes. Now researchers find that statin has another use too. High dosage of this medication can be an affective defense against dementia; Alzheimer’s disease etc. previous researches had shown that statins help deal with symptoms of dementia. The researchers DR Tin-Tse Lin and his associates looked at a sample of patients in order to examine association of statin with new cases of dementia. They identified 57,669 people who were over 65 years of age and had no history of senile or pre-senile dementia. After 4.5 years 5516 of the patients under study developed dementia. The rest formed the group that Dr Lin and his group examined. The findings showed that the patients who took the highest doses of statin had three times the chance of never developing dementia. “High potency statins such as atorvastatin and rosuvastatin showed a significant inverse association with developing dementia in a dose-response manner” said Dr Lin.
