Hypoglycemia unawareness can cause problems for the family

A new research conducted by Julia Lawton from the University of Edinburgh and her colleagues claim that family members of people with Type 1 diabetes and hypoglycemia unawareness need support as they tend to restrict their lives in order to help the person with hypoglycemia get diagnosed and treated for their condition. The research study involved 24 adult family members of people with type 1 diabetes and hypoglycemia unawareness. During interviews conducted by the researchers, the family members confessed to being physically afraid of the patients because of their aggressive behavior and personality changes. They also told the researchers how they felt anxious and worried about the safety of the person with hypoglycemia unawareness. The authors of the study say, "Our findings reveal a caregiver group currently 'in the shadow of the patient' and in urgent need of information and emotional support."
