Increased risks to hospital admissions by multiple medicine usage – true or false?

A new study proves that people with one condition and taking multiple medications are predisposed to hospital admissions, while people with more conditions and using multiple drugs are associated with a normal rate of hospital admissions. The study is published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology. “Our work shows that we need more sophisticated approaches to assessing the appropriateness of each patient`s set of medicines”, said Dr. Rupert Payne, study lead author. Dr. Payne, in collaboration with colleagues from Glasgow and Nottingham examined data of 180,815 long-term clinical conditions in adults. The final results prove that adult with a single condition and with more medications were at higher risks to hospital admission, unlike others with multiple conditions and multiple medications. Dr. Payne finds it important to be aware of the effects of taking various medications for a single condition. The goal of this research is to develop more sophisticated approaches for identifying the right and only needed medications for patients.
