Mercury levels in fish still unknown

According to new research published in Environmental Health Perspectives showed the highest concerns over the negative effects of mercury on fetal development. As per this research it is not good to have fish and fish products during the course of pregnancy. Fish products had during pregnancy may lead to harmful effects. The pregnant ladies are supposed to take this precaution due to the high level of mercury present in it. The main author of research Professor Jean Golding OBE, explains, “We were pleasantly surprised to find that fish contributes such a small amount (only seven per cent) to blood mercury levels. We have previously found that eating fish during pregnancy has many health benefits for both mother and child. We hope many more women will now consider eating more fish during pregnancy. It is important to stress, however, that pregnant women need a mixed balanced diet. They should include fish with other dietary components that are beneficial including fruit and vegetables.”
