Premature birth of children faces retinal detachments risk in life

According to Swedish Study in Ophthalmology, a journal of American Academy of Ophthalmology, Children have the risk of getting retinal detachment 19 times greater in future when compared to peers. In the initial population, long time investigation of the organization between preterm birth and later retinal detachment, it is determined by the researches that birth after a period of 32 weeks is related to have increased risks of retinal detachment in adolescence, childhood and young age. It is indicated by the studies that the requirements for ophthalmologic begins in children and young age adults very prematurely and extremely. And it is stated that US is 6th largest state in premature births with nearly 500,000 premature births every year. Swedish nationwide population journals and registers of nearly three million births right from 1973 to 2008 proves about premature born form which it was divided into two groups, like those who were born in between 1973 to 1986 in which there is a point of national retinopathy prematurity program was established and the other group is that born between 1987 to 2008. Retinopathy of prematurity causes abnormality of blood vessels to grow back in the eye and cause retinal detachment which causes risk of childhood blindness. It may lead to blindness unless surgery is not performed to it. Anna –Karin Edstedt Bonamy, M.D., Ph.D., Pediatric at Karolinska Institute in Stockholm said that “we may just be seeing the tip of the iceberg of late ophthalmic complications after premature birth.”
