Scientists Find Mutant Protein Leading to Sudden Death
A good number of sudden deaths are caused by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy or HCM. Especially vulnerable have been young people under 30 in United States. It is a syndrome in which the cardiac muscles will thicken causing the heart to become weaker. Scientists at Harvard Medical School have found a way to silence the sudden death now.
Treatment till date is unavailable for the syndrome. “There’s really no treatment for HCM right now. You can treat symptoms like chest pain or an arrhythmia, but that’s not getting at the fundamental problem”, says Christine Seidman, Professor of Medicine in and Genetics. However the latest finding of the researchers seems to be a break through in the process of developing effective treatment for the same.
After prolonged research the scientists have been able to identify the bad copy of genes making heart muscle proteins that is a major cause of HCM. With the cause identified the cure is likely to follow soon.
