US adults have high levels of low density lipoprotein

Paul Muntner, Ph.D., and his colleagues from the University of Alabama at Birmingham recently published a study report that says high LDL levels are very common among adults in United States. The researchers looked at 20 years olds from 6 national surveys. The researchers were trying to determine what the trends for control, treatment and awareness were. There was no noticeable change in the prevalence of LDL from 1999 to 2010. However an increase in LDL awareness was observed it was 48.9 percent in 1999 to 2000 to 62.8 percent in 2003 to 2004. However there was no increase in awareness from 2009-2010. Treatment rates increased from 41.3% in 1999-2000 to 72.6% in 2007-2008 and dropped to 70% in 2009-2010. The controlled LDL in treated patients was 45% in 1999-2000 and 65.3% in 2005-2006 and saw a decrease in 2009 to 2010 to 63.6%.
