Identical twins with significant differences in weight present healthy obesity
A new study in which participated 16 pairs of identical twins (in which one was lean and the other one obese) comes with surprising results. 8 of the obese twins were healthy, while the other 8 had poor blood fat. This study is led by Dr. Kirski Pietiläinen, Dr. Jussi Naukkarinen and colleagues from the Obesity Research Unit, University of Helsinki, situated in Finland and was published in the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD), the so-called Diabetologia.
In this study, researchers analyzed transcriptional pathways and different fat depots, in order to find out the reason of weight differences.
The authors conclude: “Our results suggest that maintenance of high mitochondrial transcription and lack of inflammation in SAT are associated with low liver fat and MHO … future studies of the MHO phenotype may suggest new potentially drug targets – with the most effective intervention point perhaps being improving mitochondrial function and prevention of inflammation in adipose tissue”.
