Vigorous Exercise Reduces Risk of Developing Epilepsy

Good news! Newest research from Sweden shows that young adults who actively participate in an invigorating lifestyle like frequent exercise can reduce the risk of developing epilepsy. 1.17 million military Swedish men who were born between 1950 and 1987 participated in a 40-year longitudinal study to assess the risk of developing epilepsy. A study was published in the Journal Neurology showed that men who had high quality of being fit are 80 percent less likely to develop the disease. Dr. Elinor Ben-Menachem, a professor of neurology and epilepsy at University of Gothenburg in Sweden said that there is strong link between physical fitness and neurological functions, most especially in brain development. "We think fitness does amazing things in the brain," she said. Though several factors may contribute to the development of epilepsy, former studies proved that exercise safeguards the brain against depression and other neurological disorders, and likewise hastens memory and neurological functions.
