Infection is main cause of failed prosthetic knee joints

According to the research ‘The Epidemiology of Revision Total Knee Arthroplasty’ conducted in the United States, accepts that there has been a constant increase in number of total knee replacement cases. This procedure continues to increase with the number of revision total knee replacement surgeries. They found out that infection is the basic cause of these increasing surgeries. The report was presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. The researchers attained data from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample. They further evaluated the cause of knee failure for around 301,718 cases of revision between the years from 2005 and 2010. The researchers found out that these revision surgeries were comparatively more common in women that are 58 percent. Usually this woman lies between the ages from 65 to 74. As per this research the authors believes optimizing the patient’s health before the surgery. The doctors need to pay thorough attention to the surgical team to control the risk of periprosthetic joint infection.
