Genetic factors stop diabetes` progression
According to a new study, genetic variants which are predisposed to diabetes aren’t associated with the condition`s progression, after insulin treatment. The results of this study are published in Diabetes Care. Kaixin Zhou, Ph.D. from the University of Dundee in the UK, in collaboration with colleagues analyzed the electronic medical records of 5,250 patients who had type 2 diabetes. The group of researchers is trying to identify the relation between genetic, biochemical and clinical factors which could together lead to type 2 diabetes` progression.
The group of researchers discovered that both high and low (BMI) body mass index is linked with progression risk of diabetes. They believe that high progression risk is associated with early diagnosis and younger patients starting to take insulin.
“The genetic factors that predispose to diabetes are different from those that cause rapid progression of diabetes suggesting a difference in biological process that needs further investigation”, wrote the authors.
