HPV Tests Along With Pap smear Test can help In the Early Detection of Cervical Cancer in Women
HPV OR human papillomavirus is a sexually transmitted infection which often disappears by itself. But if left untreated it may cause cervical cancer in women. A research by U-M Medical School has found that when HPV tests were teamed with Pap smear tests in low risk women it helped to detect cervical cancer. It was also noted that it was female family physicians and resident doctors who normally recommended these tests.
The medical community has set new guidelines that advise Pap smear every three years or Pap smear and HPV co- tests every five years for women between the age of 30-65 years. Cervical cancer can become the most preventable form of cancer if these tests are routinely advised.
Further studies are also required to understand why male doctors shy away from recommending these tests. They may require more training on gynecological and screening guidelines.
