The relationship of MND with algae
A new study identified the relation between a toxic amino acid in blue-green algae ad several fatal conditions for which this ingredient could be helpful, in the form of therapies. Scientists are talking long time ago about the link between consumption of water and food that contains blue-green algae and motor neuron disease. However, there is still concern about the fact that the algae could damage the nervous system.
There was a recent study made regarding this topic by researchers from the University of Technology, situated in Sidney. This study was led by Dr. Ken Rodgers, in collaboration with Dr. Paul Cox, leading ethno botanist and researchers from the Institute of EthnoMedicine in Wyoming in the US. The research is published in the journal PLOS ONE.
Dr. Rachael Dunlop stated that a lot of people associate blue-green algae with increased risks to motor neuron disease. “The missing piece of the puzzle was how this might occur. Finally, we have the piece”, said Dr. Dunlop. “Common amongst all neurodegenerative diseases is the problem of clumps of proteins overloading cells and forcing them to `commit suicide`. This research reveals that BMAA can also trigger this process”.
