4 decade low abortion rate in the US

According to a recent survey, the abortion rates in the US have come down to the lowest in the last 40 years- a laudable fact indeed. This highlights the increased use of contraception during the early pregnancy. In the year 2011, on an average 16.9 abortions were performed per 1000 women (15 to 44 years of age) as against 16.3 per 100 women in 1973; much safer figure compared to 29.3 per 100 women in 1981. The prime author of the study, Rachel Jones, said, “With abortion rates falling in almost all states, our study did not find evidence that the national decline in abortions during this period was the result of new state abortion restrictions.” Right since 2011, various laws have been implemented by many US states, making abortions harder to be carried out. The drop in abortion rates is also fuelled by the economic recession prompting couples to holdup childbearing.
