Neuronal disorder caused by impaired cell division
An essential amino acid for error-free cell division was discovered by Prof. Erich Nigg and his team of researchers from the Biozentrum of the University of Basel. The results of this study are published in the US journal Current Biology. Prof. Nigg and his group of researchers made a significant step in cell division: centrosome duplication and its role chromosomes` segregation.
The first author of this study is Christian Arquint. “When during our investigations of cell division and centrosome duplication we came across a connection to the disorder microcephaly, we were particularly pleased, as this helps us to better understand how this disorder develops”, said Christian Arquint.
The group of researchers, together with Prof. Erich Nigg is planning to do more investigation in the future regarding the errors in cell division and how these errors are associated or linked to the illness microcephaly.
