Misconceptions and Insufficient Knowledge about Pelvic Floor Disorders More Prevalent Among Non White Women

Pelvic floor disorders and its symptoms of urinary incontinence, prolapsed pelvic organ and fecal incontinence is a cause of major concern. It has been found that non white women that are those of African American, Asian and Hispanic descent in the US suffer from a lot of misconceptions and have very little knowledge about this medical condition. Therefore this condition is often left untreated resulting in many complications. Marsha K. Guess and her colleagues have done a study of a cross section of women from a range of socio economic strata of society and found that although women with pelvic organ prolapse had some ideas about the problem, those with urinary incontinence had practically no knowledge and their disease was more often than not left untreated. Medical interventions that are culturally sensitive are urgently required to raise awareness and show women what symptoms to look for so that they can start treatment.
