Giant Cell Arteritis discovery

According to a new research from Queen Mary University of London, the so-called Giant Cell Arteritis (GCA) condition is caused by neutrophils, a certain group of white blood cells. The results of this study are published in the journal Circulation Research.

The study proves that these white blood cells are very dangerous and could lead to blindness or stroke. The study has the role to present the relation between neutrophils and GCA and it was released based on patients` blood samples comparison with vascular diseases. The lead author of the study is Mauro Perretti, Professor of Immunopharmacology, Queen Mary University of London.

“We hope our study will lead to doctors monitoring the status of their patients` neutrophils in order to fully and truly assess disease progression and therapeutic control”, commented Professor Perretti.

The research was released by Professor Perretti, in collaboration with colleagues, Professor Bhaskar Dasgupta, Head of Rheumatology at Southend University Hospital and Professor Justin Mason from Hammersmith Hospital.
