Comparison between two commonly used estrogen drugs and cardiovascular safety

According to a latest study conducted at University of Washington, Seattle and published in JAMA Internal Medicine compared the two mostly used oral estrogen medications and their cardiovascular safety. The research shows that the oral hormone therapy conjugated equine estrogens used by women to relieve menopause symptoms. This is associated with risk for venous thrombosis and also possibly leads to heart attack. There no ischemic stroke risk when compared to the hormone therapy oral estradiol. The study was conducted with 384 postmenopausal women ranging from ages 30 to 79, who were going oral hormone therapy and were also members of the Group Health Cooperative. Through they could study the effects of medications. According to the authors “The findings of this comparative safety investigation need replication. If confirmed, the results would provide valuable information to women and their health care professionals when making safety decisions regarding available HT options for menopausal symptom management.”
