Higher levels of D vitamin improve mood and cognition in PD patients

According to a new study, a high level of D vitamin could help patients with Parkinson`s disease (PD) to prevent or delay depression and cognitive impairment. The results of this study are published in the Journal of Parkinson`s Disease.

“About 30% of persons with PD suffer from cognitive impairment and dementia, and dementia is associated with nursing home placement and shortened life expectancy”, said Amie L. Peterson, MD, of the Oregon Health and Sciences University.

In a lot of patients, the severity of the disease is determined by the level of vitamin D in their body. Patients with low level of vitamin D encountered the more severe forms of the condition. Low levels of vitamin D is also associated with high risks to other diseases as well, such as type 2 diabetes, multiple sclerosis, hypertension, cancer and certain infections.
