Low Salt Diets Help Patients of Chronic Kidney Disease Control Blood Pressure, Intercellular Fluid and Protein in Urine

The health of both the heart and kidney are benefitted by the reduction of salt in one’s diet. A low salt diet study done on patients suffering from chronic kidney disease (CKD) has shown that their blood pressure was lowered by 10/4 mm Hg, intercellular fluid reduced by 1 liter and the protein content in the urine was halved. And there were no significant side effects. Emma McMohan from the University of Queensland Australia says that this low salt diet could help increase the life span of CKD patients who would otherwise have to depend on dialysis or kidney transplant to survive. Restriction of salt in one’s diet is an inexpensive, low risk method of preventing cardiovascular disease and kidney failure in people with CKD. In the long run it will help in improving the policies chalked out for care of patients of chronic kidney disease.
