Many suicides were caused by the 2008 economic crisis
According to International Labour Organization estimates the number of unemployed people in 2009 was nearly 212 million which was 34 million more than 2007. The W. H. O called for monitoring and protection especially among those facing poverty.
In this study that looked at suicide trends internationally, researchers looked at latest data from 54 countries to examine the suicide trend or any changes of it post the 2008 economic downturn. They also wanted to see what influence sex, age, country and change of jobs had on suicide trends.
The researchers estimated expected suicides using former trends. They used 2000 as the starting point because there was an impact of the recession of the 90s on suicide rate. The main analysis however focused on 2009.
There was a rise in male suicide in 2009 by 3.3% worldwide. Highest increase in male suicides were in EU member states which saw a 13.3% rise.
