Morning-after drugs, useless for heavier women

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) initiated a review about emergency contraceptives, to see if it is true that these are less efficient in heavier women. HRA Pharma, French drug maker reported that Norlevo, a morning-after pill performed less effective in women over the weight of 165 pounds (75 kilograms) and it didn`t work at all in women over 80 kilograms. EMA is now trying to discover is body weight influences pills` efficiency or not. “This is an efficacy issue”, said Monika Benstetter, an agency spokeswoman. “We need to find out what the association is with (body mass index) and if there is a cut-off threshold for when the medicine becomes less effective”. There`s an active ingredient, lenovorgestrel in numerous contraceptives, including Norlevo, Levonnelle, Levodonna and ellaOne. The study proves that Norlevo failed to work efficiently in heavier women. The pill is recommended to take in the upcoming 72 hours after unprotected sex.
