A protein that may predict knock of thyroid cancer recurrence

According to new research conducted at the National Institutes of Health Bethesda, MD, have taken the initial lead to steps to find out if a protein, name Programmed Death Ligand 1 can be useful to find out about the occurrence of disease in thyroid cancer patients. This report was presented in the Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons. This study brought in that as much of 80 percent of patients diagnosed with thyroid cancer have this particular type of protein. This gave researchers idea about this protein could be a real indicator that would help them to predict about the disease. One of the researchers Mr. Ellis explains the report further, “If the immune system tries to approach the tumor and its immediate surrounding area, PD-L1 will make the immune system take a step back and turn off. Surgeons could potentially look at the patient's PD-L1 expression following biopsy or immediately after resection to see if the patient is more likely to have a recurrence.”
