Air Pollution Identified as Reason for Heart Attacks

According to the research paper presented by Dr Savina Nodari of Italy at the Acute Cardiac Care Congress 2013, air pollution is one of the major causes of growing incidences of heart attacks. The Congress was the annual meeting of ACCA under the European Society of Cardiology. The event took place at Madrid in Spain during 12th -14th October. According to Dr Nodari, “In the last few decades there has been a worrying increase in air pollution. Regardless of local environmental and social policies to approve air quality, the negative effect of air pollution continues to be an important public health problem.” Fine as well as ultrafine particles produced as a result of air pollution can not only create respiratory problems but could lead to acute cardiovascular events or even death. The cut off set up by the European Union is 50 micrograms/m3 in respect of these harmful elements but experience shows that cardiovascular problems could result even with levels that are lower than the cutoff lines.
