New Hope for Gastric Reflux Patients
Gastric reflux syndrome is a major problem in people residing in western hemisphere. A recent statistics reveal that one in every five persons suffers from the syndrome and it has become one of the most common medical conditions. However it is not a problem confined solely to Western countries as people from Asia and Africa are also found suffering from the disease.
Contributing factors are fad diets and wayward lifestyles of the people. Gastric reflux could also be results of genetic and hormonal issues. Research has been able to identify nerve pathways in spinal cords in human anatomy that is the carrier for transmitting signals of pain to brain that are associated with the syndrome.
"This is the first time anyone has shown the pain pathways in the spinal cord that receive direct input from acid-sensitive nerve endings in the oesophagus," said Dr Andrea Harrington, a research fellow of Australian Research Council explaining the work of the research team.
