Alcohol Addiction Burning Out Young Doctors

A major social problem that is currently developing in Australia is alcohol addiction in the rank of young doctors. Not only excess alcohol intake is burning them out but it is developing various other negative symptoms in their attitude including suicidal tendencies. Such facts have come to light in course of a national survey. In course of the survey over 14,000 young doctors in Australia were interviewed. A disheartening revelation was the acute mental problems in younger generation of doctors developing various negative tendencies. It was also found that 1 in 10 qualified doctors have such problems. Suicidal tendencies were also detected among one in five medical students as well. According to the Chairman of Beyondblue that conducted the survey “an immediate rallying call for action” is necessary so that the over work and its effects can be countered. Questions were also raised relating to the well being of the patients concerned. It was considered that a nation level strategy for mental health would be the solution.
