High dietary intake of Polyphenols results in higher longevity- Research studies

In a study, nutritional biomarkers which consider bioavailability and individual differences were used to understand the effect of polyphenols on longevity. Polyphenols are compounds found in their natural form in fruits, vegetables, nuts and cereals. They have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, ant carcinogenic qualities. The above research showed reduction in mortality rates by 30% in people with higher intake of polyphenols. A diet with minimum 650g/daily of polyphenols produced astonishing results. Raúl Zamora Ros, says that "results corroborate scientific evidence suggesting that people consuming diets rich in fruit and vegetables are at lower risk of several chronic diseases and overall mortality". Moreover it is very essential to use nutritional biomarkers and not food frequency questionnaires for the research. The focus here is to develop new, effective and sensitized nutritional biomarkers based on bioavailability of bioactive compounds in foods. This will help understand the effect of certain food intake on an individual’s health.
