Blocking Cells of the Nerves: A New Strategy for Controlling Eczema Symptoms

Research has shown that 10% of the population suffers from eczema. Initially, the symptoms of this disease such as itching and asthma were controlled by focusing on the immune system. "Most drug development has focused on trying to find a way to inhibit the immune response," said Bautista, in reference to this. Effective treatment was however not achieved through this means.

The symptom that involves itchy skin, red rashes and allergies requires effective interventions to control the deadly disease. According to the study led by Diana Bautista, a UC Berkeley neuroscientist, blocking the neurons may prevent the symptoms of eczema.

This study identified that sensory nerves of the skin react to the eczema chemicals causing itching. The study findings also indicated that by blocking what is happening in the nerves, the itching would stop that will prevent the inflammation, asthma and allergies that are caused by eczem
