Improvements in Teen Esteem through school body intervention programmes

Studies show that body dissatisfaction in adolescents has a ratio of 17.33% with girls more concerned about figure than boys. This results in depression and eating disorders, surgery use to enhance looks, obesity and unhealthy weigh loss practices like smoking. School based intervention by teachers has been recommended. Such interventions are less expensive, have a wider reach and are more sustainable in the long run. Researchers tested the effectiveness of such intervention called Me, You & Us. 16 classes of adolescent girls participated. 261 from the intervention group received six, 50-minute body image lessons from their teachers. 187 pupils received lessons normally. All pupils filled questionnaire regarding health, ethnicity, age, eating disorders. Results showed pupils from intervention group having positive effect in body image which sustained through 3 months and reliable improvements compared to 8 % from other group. Results showed no harm from receiving the programme, proving their usefulness.
