Older Epilepsy Patients Can Find Relief from Surgery

The Henry Ford Hospital and Spectrum health conducts a study that shows the possibility of surgery to be an effective intervention for people with epilepsy. This finding is considered to be something that counters the use of traditional methods of treatment. Sanjay Patra, a neurosurgeon, says, “Traditionally, there has been a tendency to exclude older patients from surgery for fear of increased risk of medical or surgical complications.”The doctor added that the study provides enough evidence that surgery can also be applied to older epilepsy patients. Patients with refractory seizures actually no longer respond to conventional interventions. The study covered those who are suffering from this stage including those with partial epilepsy. The results of the surgical outcomes indicated that surgery can be very effective in dealing with the disease regardless of the patient’s age. The surgical procedure added to the removal of the sections of the brains where seizures emerge.
