It is considered that athletes who are willing to improve their performance should avoid taking D2 vitamin. A new study released at Appalachian State University's Human Performance Lab at the N.C. Research Campus in Kannapolis proves that athletes who took D2 vitamin had their D3 vitamin level decreased which led to muscle damage following intense weight lifting.
The study was led by Dr. David Nieman (Dr.P.H.), in collaboration with Dr. Andrew Shanely, Dustin Dew and Mary Pat Meaney from Appalachian, Dr. Nicholas Gillitt from the Dole Research Laboratory and Dr. BeiBei Luo from Shanghai University of Sport. The results of this study are published in the journal Nutrients.
The study examined the effects of D2 vitamin in athletes. “High vitamin D2 levels are not a normal experience for the human body. Taking high doses of vitamin D2 caused something to happen at the muscle level that isn't in the best interest of the athletes. Now we need others to test this and see if they come up with the same results”, said Nieman.
