Colonoscopy is a better preventive option against colorectal cancer

Colonoscopy reduces the risk of colorectal cancer compared with sigmoidoscopy. This study was conducted by New England Journal of Medicine from two long term studies and also identifies features molecular features that despite having recently undergone colonoscopy the reason for developing tumors in individuals. In both colonoscopy and sigmoidoscopy, the internal surface of the colon is examined with the help of a fiberoptic tube, with light and camera attachment at the end. But colonoscopy covers a larger area of visualization compared to sigmoidoscopy. In the current study, data analysis was done on information gathered from 89,000 participants every two years. They had either had colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy. Over a 22 year period there were 1,815 cases of cancer in the participants and 474 related deaths. Sigmoidoscopy reduced the risk of dying from left side tumor; colonoscopy reduced the risk of any colorectal cancer deaths.
