Hundred Genetic Variants Related to Cancer Found in Junk DNA

Major problem so far in treatment of cancer was non-discovery of its true reasons. However, scientists seem to have made a breakthrough by discovering o 100 genetic variants of cancer causing mutants. Many of these are related to breast and prostrate cancer in patients. Advantage of the discovery is that scientists are now in possession with a new method of finding out disease causing variants of genes.
The discovery will also help the medical scientists to understand more clearly the region of non-coding genome. This was an area that was less understood so far despite the fact that scientists have been able to analyze the much larger region of coding genome.
Method that has now been devised will depend on identifying DNA regions that reside within non-coding zone. It will help detect mutants that are not converted into protein and causes cancer. At the same time it can help detect causes of other diseases as well. “Our technique……is not just beneficial for cancer research, but can be extended to other genetic diseases too”, said researcher Mark Gerstein.
