Relationship discovered between appetite and intense exercises
According to a new study released by Aberdeen nutritionists, people who do highly intense exercises are predisposed to consume unhealthy food. The results of this study are published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. The study was led by scientists from the University of Aberdeen`s Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health.
Appetite responses in the brain for intense exercises were identified by fMRI scans. Dr Daniel Crabtree from the University of Aberdeen's Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health is one of the researchers involved in the study.
There were 15 men asked to run for 1 hour before brain scanning. Before running, they were shown pictures of healthy and unhealthy food. “Our findings showed that activation in the insula was reduced when looking at pictures of high calorie foods such as pizzas, burgers and doughnuts, following exercise”, commented Dr. Crabtree. He considers that more research is needed to understand the link between brain responses to unhealthy food following highly intense exercises.
