Responsive reticence determined by toddler's language abilities and shyness
Earlier research works have concluded that language difficulties in some toddlers are associated with their shy nature. However, as per a recent study conducted on about 800 toddlers (aged 14, 20, 24 months), that children pent- up by behavior tend to not speak much. So, it is no deficiency or incapability that some toddlers speak less, it is just unwillingness.
According to Ashley K. Smith and Soo H. Rhee, who constitute an integral part of the research team, said, “Our findings suggest that inhibited behaviors like shyness don't hamper language acquisition overall, but instead relate specifically to how toddlers express themselves through words.”
Another peculiar finding of the study was that the levels of language and shyness were higher in girls than in boys.
It is agreed that the children of shy nature may require assistance with enhancing their speaking skills.
