Discovery of Seven New Types of Biomarkers Can Help Personalize Breast Cancer Treatment
A research funded by the Breast Cancer Campaign, Nottingham UK, has found seven new biomarkers for breast cancer. Dr Andy Green leader of the research says that this will help to personalize the treatment of the disease thereby reducing the chances of over or under treatment or the side effects.
Currently only two biomarkers are tested in suspected cases of breast cancer. But the disease is biologically very complex and different tumors have been found to have different properties. The research tested tissues from the Breast Cancer campaign’s Tissue Bank and found seven distinguishable types of tumors. Each had its own different survival outcome.
A diagnostic test of these seven distinct types of breast cancer should be available in clinics within two years. Called the Nottingham Prognostic Index Plus this method will integrate the seven new classes into the existing clinical test. The life-saving and life-extending treatments already available can then be used more effectively to suit each different type of breast cancer.
