Open, warm communication and care by practitioners and parents can make kids adhere to their prescribed medications

10% of the adolescents today suffer from chronic diseases like diabetes, asthma or cystic fibrosis. There are some barriers which make them block the medicine reports, Journal of Adolescent Health review. The barriers are also related to adolescent developments. 28 studies which included teenagers with a wide range of chronic diseases were analyzed. The teenagers reported their own experience for non adherence to prescribed medications. The multiple barriers faced included relationship with their parents, peers and also the health care providers. Results also figured other social barriers. These included a desire to be normal and accepted as the peer. Forgetfulness was another issue. Also unwanted side effects from medicines proved as major barriers. It is important for practitioners to understand the best way to communicate with these adolescents. They need to make them a part of their treatment through open, warm communication. This will lead to better adherence to treatments.
